What is Ashura Awareness Week?
The Ashura Awareness Week is a week-long awareness campaign in February. The theme of the campaign this year is: “Knowledge and Action”
The purpose of the campaign is to introduce the humanitarian message of Ashura and then apply it on real life situations in the world today such as the one currently in Haiti. Knowing that there are people in Haiti that need your help is not enough; your knowledge should demand action. We all have a responsibility, as learned from Imam Hussain, to act upon our values rather than stand in the ranks of the silent majority.
Last Year's campaign theme was: “Don’t distance yourself!”
The purpose of the AAW campaign last year was to introduce the humanitarian message of Ashura and then apply it on real life examples of oppression in the world such as what was happening in Congo, Darfur, Afghanistan, and Parachinar in Pakistan. We all have a responsibility, as learned from Imam Hussain, to stand up to injustice and oppression wherever it may be encountered.
